FAQ's
WHAT IS TMS?
TMS is a non-invasive treatment that we use to help patients struggling with depression. It works by delivering gentle magnetic pulses to specific nerve cells in the brain, particularly in the area responsible for mood regulation. In many people with depression, this part of the brain tends to be underactive.
Through repeated stimulation of this area, TMS has shown significant antidepressant effects. You might also hear it referred to as rTMS (repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation) because each session involves multiple pulses to effectively target the brain.
CAN I GET REIMBURSED?
TMS is covered by most insurance providers, which is great news for our patients. However, coverage details can vary. Factors like pre-authorization, the type of healthcare provider administering the treatment (whether it’s an MD, CMA, RNP, RN, etc.), and even the number of previous medication attempts might affect claim approvals. It’s always a good idea to review your insurer’s policy guidelines to understand what’s required.
WHO CAN GET TMS TREATMENT?
TMS is typically recommended for adults with Major Depressive Disorder who haven’t seen enough improvement from antidepressant medications during their current episode. To determine if TMS is right for you, your doctor will carefully review your medication history, depression scores, and other relevant factors. These assessments help us decide whether TMS Therapy is the best next step.
WHAT DOES TMS FEEL LIKE?
During TMS treatment, a magnetic coil is gently placed on the left front side of your head, targeting an area of the brain known as the Left Dorso-Lateral Prefrontal Cortex. As the magnetic pulses are delivered, you’ll hear a clicking sound and feel a tapping sensation on your head. Most patients find the experience quite manageable and often pass the time by watching television or reading during the session.
ARE THERE ANY SIDE EFFECTS TO TMS THERAPY?
One of the benefits of TMS treatment is that it doesn’t come with the side effects commonly associated with antidepressants. While some patients may experience mild discomfort or a headache, most are able to get back to their daily activities right after the session. However, it’s important to remember that TMS Therapy is a medical procedure, so if you do experience any side effects during or after treatment, be sure to let your doctor know.
DO I NEED TO GET FOLLOW-UP TREATMENT?
It’s important to have a conversation with your doctor about your long-term treatment plan, including whether maintenance treatment with TMS might be right for you.
Caution: The treatment may not be effective or appropriate for all patients, additional side effects may occur, and all patients should talk to their physician to learn more about the treatment and potential risks.
